Jewell Wilious Vann Powell
October 26, 1923 - November 4, 2021
Jewell passed away November 4, 2021, in her home, surrounded by family. She had just celebrated her 98th birthday the week before. Jewell (Judy) was born October 26, 1923, in Brownsville, TN, to the late Etta Lovelass Broyles Vann and Reuben M. Vann. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, William C. Powell, Sr., and a brother, Doyle Davis. She is survived by two sons, William C. Powell, Jr. (Connie) and Robert L. Powell (Sandra); four grandchildren, Priscilla (Jason) Kahne, Michelle Watts, Marilyn (Ethan) Neff, and Will Powell; great-granddaughter, Kiera Watts; five nieces, Vonda (Howard) Shelton, Cynthia (Marcel) Poyner, Lynda Kay (Lewis) Rowe, Glenn Fuqua, Elisabeth (Kurt) Register; two great-nieces, Lori Shelton (Bruce) Longest and Laurel Register. Growing up in rural West Tennessee, Judy knew the value of hard work. After excelling in high school, Judy took advantage of an opportunity to work at the Pentagon in Washington D.C., before returning to Memphis where she worked for Ford Motor Company and soon met her husband, Bill Powell. Once married, Judy stayed at home to raise their two boys. She also began a lifelong commitment of teaching Sunday School in her church. It was only in the past few years that she passed that torch, but still continued a powerful Bible study and prayer ministry. After moving from Memphis to Hendersonville, TN in 1967, Judy and Bill were both very instrumental in helping start Bluegrass Baptist Church (now Indian Lake Peninsula Church). Many people have been touched by Judy’s knowledge and devotion to the Scriptures and her sharing the love of Christ with all those she met. Many sought her out for advice, council, and prayer. She was a strong woman of faith, and her witness and testimony will be missed. Visitation will be from 4-8pm Friday, Nov. 12th in the Sanctuary of Indian Lake Peninsula Church, 235 Indian Lake Rd., Hendersonville, TN, with her funeral service on Saturday, Nov. 13th at 10am, also in the Sanctuary. Burial will follow at Hendersonville Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in her memory to the Ministry and Outreach of Indian Lake Peninsula Church.
